Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar has been charged with murder of wrestler Sagar Dhankar on May 4 at the national capital's Chhatrasal Stadium. While Dhankar and two of his friends had to be hospitalised, the 23-year-old, who had competed in the 97-kg Greco-Roman category, died of his injuries.

While Sushil had been arrested for the murder, the Delhi court has now framed charges against the Olympian under sections of murder, attempt to murder, rioting, unlawful assembly & other sections including criminal conspiracy. The charges have been framed against Sushil Kumar & 17 others. Charges have also been framed against 2 accused who are absconding.

The Delhi Police, in its charge sheet, has said that the star masterminded a conspiracy leading to a brawl at the Chhatrasal Stadium. It was this that allegedly led to the demise of a former junior national wrestling champion. The Delhi Police further stated that Kumar wanted to "establish supremacy" among the young batch of wrestlers.

Police statement also suggests that the victim used to live in a flat owned by Sushil Kumar and the two also had a dispute over the rent of the flat which got intense which also could have led to the incident. Dhankad had reportedly abused Kumar which aggravated the dispute.

Kumar was arrested in May 2021 from Mundka after being on the run for over a fortnight.
