Despite brilliant batting in the first innings, Team India could not capitalise on the opportunity as the Indian bowlers were decimated by the New Zealand pair – Tom Latham (145 off 104) and Kane Williamson (94 off 98). While Shikhar Dhawan (72 off 77) and Shubman Gill (50 off 65) provided a solid foundation to the visitors, Shreyas Iyer (80 off 76) too joined the party with his brilliant knock, guiding India to 306-7.

Notably, Shreyas Iyer bats at number 3, the position which owns by legendary batter Virat Kohli. While responding to the queries regarding uncertainty over his position, Iyer responded with a cheeky response. “Players toh aate jaate rehte hain, consistency sabse important hain. Ek career me acha abura, upar neeche toh hota rehta rahega main apne khel ko improve and khud ko motivate rakhne me believe rakhta hu (Players will keep coming and leaving, consistency is very important. In a career, ups and downs will keep happening, but I keep myself motivated)," said Shreyas Iyer.

The Indian batter further revealed that he always keeps himself optimistic and only gives priority to his game. "I don't like thinking too much about the future. I concentrate on what's in my hands which is training, and as back-to-back games are happening, I want to ensure that my fitness level is very good. My mindset is to keep performing consistently and be in the present," explained Iyer.

Notably, Shreyas Iyer has been in and out of the playing XI due to various changes in the squad. The right-handed batter has had to bat in various positions in the batting order too. He had lost his place to Kohli during India's tour of England. While Iyer Is part of the squad during the New Zealand tour, he is unlikely to be included in the squad during the Bangladesh tour as senior pros like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Rohit Sharma will form the top-order.
