Gone were the days when only batting and bowling skills were the criteria for a selection in the side. Now, fielding is considered equally important. We have seen many instances where a brilliant catch or a splendid fielding effort on the ropes resulted in a win for the side. The standard of fielding not only has improved at the international stage but also in domestic games as well. The same was witnessed in a Plunket Shield match in New Zealand, where a brilliant catch at slip stunned the internet.
The match between Otago Volts and Auckland Aces saw a brilliant catch by Aces’ fielder William O'Donnell. In the 44 th over, spinner Will Somerville bowled a ball on the middle stump which Volts’ batter Dale Phillips tried to scoop on leg side. However, O’ Donnell showed a brilliant anticipation at slip to ran towards the leg slip and plucked a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss the batter on 45.
