India’s wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson has been garnering quite a few headlines these days. While the Kerala-born cricketer is mostly in news for not finding a place in India’s playing XI, Samson has attracted significant attention for his fan following across the globe. No matter where India plays, Samson finds a few fans who are there to cheer for him.
But the craze has reached a whole other level as Samson’s fans were spotted in Qatar at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022. A few spectators were spotted holding banners with Samson’s pictures printed on them. While the text on one of the banners read , “Regardless of the match, the team, or the player, we are with you…Sanju Samson”, the second banner said “Lots of Love from Qatar. We Support #SanjuSamson”.
The two pictures have gone viral as one of the Twitter users shared it with a caption, “Sanju Samson's fans in FIFA World Cup - Craze of Sanju Samson is just amazing.”
Notably, Samson has been struggling to get a place in India’s playing XI. On the recent tour to New Zealand, Samson could not play in any of the three T20Is while he was benched after scoring decently in the first ODI. This treatment of Samson by the Indian team management has not gone well with the cricketer’s fans as they have been critical of the management.
While a few shared posts on social media showing their support for Samson, others are going that extra mile by making posters for the cricketer. Now, with one game left in the series, it will be interesting to see if these social media campaigns work in favour of Samson or not. Talking practically, it seems tough for the wicketkeeper batter to find a place with Rishabh Pant being the first choice.
