Date: 4th April 2021
Time: 4:30 AM (IST)
Venue: Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui
After a highly competitive T20I series (1-1) between New Zealand Women and Australia Women, the action now shifts to Mount Maunganui for an exciting 3-match ODI series. It will be Meg Lanning’s side who will come into the series as clear favourites being the top ranked limited-overs team by a huge margin. On the other hand, the Kiwis will be without their skipper Sophie Devine who has been ruled out of the series. Despite of the setback, Amy Satterthwaite led side won’t be an easy opponent to beat, considering the fact that they are playing in their own backyard.
Bay Oval is one of the most iconic venues in New Zealand. The last ODI match played here was a men’s match between the Kiwis and Men in Blue in February 2020. A total of 596 runs were scored in that match, which clearly signifies that the wicket in Mount Maunganui is a brilliant one to bat on. The ground is open on all sides and the wind plays a crucial role in deciding which bowlers should bowl from which end. This means that a few tactical moves during the course of the match could be a deciding factor.
Talking about the form of players coming to the series, Jess Jonassen (3/26) and Ashleigh Gardner (73* off 48) were the star performers for the Aussies in the first T20I. On the other hand, Frances Mackay stole the show in the second contest with her all-round heroics (2/20 and 46 off 39). With most of the players which featured in T20Is expected to retain their place in ODIs, the stage is perfectly set for another mouth-watering contest between the two arch-rivals in women’s cricket.
