After a thrilling T20I series where West Indies won 2-1 over Sri Lanka, the action now shifts to 3-match ODI series. The opener will be played on Wednesday and the stage is set for another exciting contest between the two sides.
Both the sides met for a 3-match ODI series last year where Sri Lanka completed a clean sweep quite convincingly. While the whole world has changed since that time, Sri Lanka’s fortunes have also taken a nosedive. After losing consecutive Test series against South Africa and England, the Lankans fell short in the recently-concluded T20I series.
On the other hand, West Indies also suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bangladesh. However, they have got back a full-strength squad and they are looking a lethal side on paper. While the skipper stole the show with his six sixes off Akila Dananjaya in the T20I series, Pollard will always be a key player in the ODIs as well.
Out of the 17 matches played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the teams batting first have won 10 contests while the side chasing have been victorious 7 times. The 300-mark has been crossed only thrice and it has not been a very easy surface to bat on. After winning the toss, electing to bat first and defend could be the preferred choice once again in this contest.
Kieron Pollard will captain the Windies side that will have experienced duo of Shai Hope and Darren Bravo back in the side. While Alzarri Joseph is expected to lead the pace attack, latest sensation Kyle Mayers is also expected to feature in the playing XI.
Dimuth Karunaratne will lead the Sri Lankan side for the ODI series. Dasun Shanaka is also expected to join the squad while Wanindu Hasaranga will keep his place in the side after impressive performances in the T20I series.
