The 20th edition of the AFC Women's Women's Asian Cup will feature as many as 12 teams from the continent. The competition is being held in India and is witnessing an increase of teams from 8 to 12 to make the footballing event all the more competitive. The championship is also set to act as the final stage of the Asian qualification from the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Consequently, as many as five teams will qualify for the main event directly. In addition, two sides will progress to the inter-confederation play-offs. It is the Japan team who are the defending champions of the Women's Asia Cup as they lifted the title way in 2018.
It should be noted that the competition was originally supposed to be held in 2021 but had to be pushed back owing to the Coronavirus pandemic. As per the latest schedule, the competition will begin on January 20, 2022.
The 12 teams set to be in the competition have been split into three groups with the top two teams from each group along with the best third-placed teams set to secure qualification into the quarter-finals.
India, who are the hosts, have been placed alongside China, Chinese Taipei, and Iran in Group A. Moreover, Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia find their names in Group B. 2018 winners Japan have been placed in Group C along with South Korea, Vietnam and Myanmar.
