India women finally played cricket after a hiatus of almost a year. They had last played international cricket in 2020 in the finals of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup against Australia. South Africa won the first ODI match and the two teams lock horns again in the second ODI at the same venue. An exciting and enthralling contest is certainly on the cards.
South Africa Women started off the series on an emphatic note as they outclassed the Indian Women in the first ODI. They were heavily dominating right throughout the course of the match and ended up crushing the India women by 8 wickets. Shabnim Ismail and Nonkululeko Mlaba starred with the white-ball as they took 3 and 2 wickets respectively. South Africa restricted the Indians to 177 and then easily chased down the total in just 40 overs. A century-run opening partnership between Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee powered South Africa home.
Indian T20 captain and ODI vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur attributed the heavy loss to the fact that India were playing cricket after a long time. However, it shouldn’t be long before the women in blue stage a comeback as resilience has been flowing in the blood of all these players, at all times. Wickets falling in clusters have always been an issue with teams and this should be something, the Indian team should address. It is after Smriti Mandhana’s wicket by Ayabhanga Khaka that triggered the collapse of the Indian team.
