After the Indian Women were comprehensively defeated by South Africa Women in the first ODI on Sunday, the stage is now set for the second contest of the 5-match series.
India had a really disappointing outing in their first international match since last year’s T20 World Cup. The long-time absence from the field reflected in the performance as the Indian side looked quite rusty in the series-opener. While the experienced duo of Harmanpreet Kaur (40 off 41) and Mithali Raj (50 off 85) looked impressive, all the other Indian batters had a fairly difficult time in Lucknow. The Indian side will be hopeful to get a steady start at top of the order from the talented opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues in this contest.
On the other hand, Sune Luus would be really satisfied with her side’s performance in the first ODI. The ever-reliant Shabnim Ismail (3/28) led the charge as South Africa’s bowling line-up restricted the hosts to a modest total of 177. In reply, Lizelle Lee (83*) and Laura Wolvaardt (80) stitched a mammoth partnership as the Proteas won the contest by 8 wickets. While the middle-order was not tested on Sunday, it will be interesting to see if the trio of Lara Goodall, Trisha Chetty and Mignon du Preez can deliver runs, if required in this contest.
Mithali Raj’s side will come out all guns blazing to level the series on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Proteas will look to go 2-0 up when the two sides clash in Lucknow.
