Australian Open: Novak Djokovic given top billing for season opening Grand Slam, to face Miomir Kecmanovic in first round

While World No.2 & US Open champion Daniil Medvedev has been set up against Henri Laaksonen, 2009 champion Rafael Nadal will begin his campaign against Marcos Giron.

After so much drama around Novak Djokovic’s participation, the draws for the 2022 Australia Open have been finally revealed. The current world No. 1(s) Ash Barty and Novak Djokovic had been given top billing for the Yearโ€™s 1st Grand Slam. Defending champion & World No.1 Novak Djokovic will begin his title defense against Miomir Kecmanovic. Meanwhile, for the Women’s Singles, World No.1 Ash Barty will meet a qualifier at the Australian Open 2022.

While World No.2 & US Open champion Daniil Medvedev has been set up against Henri Laaksonen, 2009 champion Rafael Nadal will begin his campaign against Marcos Giron. Alexander Zverev will start his Australian Open 2022 journey against D Altmaier while Stefanos Tsitsipas will play M Ymer.

On the women’s side, top seed and world number one Ashleigh Barty, who won the Adelaide International last week, will meet a qualifier first up as she targets a maiden Grand Slam title on home soil. Defending champion Naomi Osaka seeded 13, is in Barty’s quarter of the draw and will start her title defense against Colombia’s Camila Osorio. She is projected to meet the Australian in the round of 16.

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka, who has crashed early in two warm-up tournaments, will begin against Australian Storm Sanders. Us Open champion Emma Raducanu will face Sloane Stephens whole runner-up Leylah Fernandez will be up against Inglis. French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova will play Petkovic.

No Indian in Singles Main Draw

There will be no participant from India in the singles main draw in the year’s first grand slam as Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri suffered a straight-sets defeat to Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac in the Australian Open qualifiers here on Thursday. Bhambri lost his second-round qualifying match 1-6 3-6.
