Avinash Sable broke the 3000m Steeplechase national record for the 9th time as he clocked 8:11.20 to win India's first-ever Steeplechase medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Saturday. He joins Priyanka Goswami (silver medal in 10,000m racewalk), Murali Sreeshankar (silver medal in long jump) and Tejaswin Shankar (bronze medal in high jump) as India's fourth medallist in track and field at CWG 2022.

The 27-year-old was born on 13 September 1994 in Mandwa, Beed district of Maharashtra. He was born in a modest family where both his parents were farmers and he went through a lot of hardships. He also had to travel by foot for over 6km each day to reach his school as public transportation was not available.

Sable after completing his 12th standard education joined the Indian army and was part of the 5 Mahar regiment. He was posted in Siachen, Rajasthan and Sikkim, where he experienced extreme climatic conditions. Then in 2015, he took part in the individual National Cross Country Championship where he finished fifth.

Avinash then worked hard and broke the national record in the Steeplechase in 2018 and kick-started his career. He then dominated the national circuit as he has won two national championships. He also made his mark on the international stage as he bagged the Asian Championships silver medal in 2019.
