Top-seeded all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been reportedly re-appointed as Bangladesh Test captain. Earlier, Mominul Haque stepped down from the post following poor performances. Reportedly, Liton Das has been named Shakib's deputy in red-ball cricket.
Notably, Shakib had previously been trusted with the responsibility two times, as he was first appointed Test skipper in 2009 when Mashrafe Mortaza was injured in West Indies. And the second time Shakib replaced Mushfiqur Rahim in 2017. Whereas, Mominul's appointment came after the ICC banned the top-seeded all-rounder in 2019 for failing to report corrupt charges.
Mominul had just three victories as a skipper, including two draws and 12 defeats in 17 fixtures. Bangladesh's historic Test win over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui was one of those victories. The remaining two wins came against Zimbabwe. Following the loss against Sri Lanka, Mominul quit his captaincy, stating that he could not contribute and that it was better for the team to have a new leader.
Earlier, Mominul reportedly met the BCB president Nazmul Hasan to communicate his decision.
"I just told them that I cannot contribute to the side as a captain and failed to motivate the team. So I feel it is better if someone new is given the responsibility. I feel it is not right for me to do captaincy at the moment because what I feel is that if I can concentrate on my batting, it will be good for the team and me," Mominul told the reporters.
Tigers will play two Tests, three ODIs and T20Is in West Indies from 16 June to 16 July.
