Too many things can be said, unsaid, speculated and judged about with the way the talented youngsters, experienced seniors and management of the Indian cricket team has been going forward. Under the leadership of stand-in captain, KL Rahul, team India lost the three-match One Day International matches against South Africa. However, in the final ODI on Sunday, some of the decisions made on the field by KL Rahul were applauded and spoken about. Amid all this, cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra strongly opinionated the need to give senior bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar a break.

It may be noted that Bhuvneshwar is having a rough patch on the field in recent times. He failed to pick up a wicket in the first two matches of the recently concluded ODI series and the South African batters got the better of him. In addition, he was benched for the final game and  Deepak Chahar was able to impress fans as well as the experts with his spectacular all-rounder performance, nearly taking India home.

Chopra felt Kumar required a break from India’s white-ball teams after having a poor spell for the last 18 months.  Despite agreeing that there wasn’t much help for the bowlers in Paarl, Chopra added that he doesn’t see the senior bowler getting selected in the ODIs and T20Is for the near future, considering that he has been out of sorts for a while.

“Well, not because Deepak Chahar has bowled or batted the way he has. It looks like there has to be a break. Bhuvneshwar Kumar cannot walk into the team the next time India will play white-ball cricket, as simple as that. It’s about how Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn’t been looking sharp or incisive in the last 16-18 months,” Chopra said on Star Sports.

Notably, even after the Indian unit made four changes in India’s playing XI for the Newlands Cricket Ground match, South Africa pulled off a clean sweep in the three-match series. India lost the final game by 4 runs. The Men in Blue’s next assignment will be against the West Indies at home.
