In a big blow to the Indian Athletic contingent, star Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out of the Commonwealth Games 2022 set to take place in Birmingham. The Olympian reportedly suffered a groin injury in the World Championships where he won a Silver medal. Early reports have claimed that Neeraj Chopra has been advised to take a month-long rest.

The Tokyo Olympic medalist recently scripted history by becoming the second Indian athlete to win a medal at World Athletics Championships and first India to have a podium finish. Maintaining his stellar form this season, Neeraj Chopra came up with a throw of 88.13m in his fourth attempt in the final to finish second behind reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada.

Neeraj Chopra had a slugging start in the final as his first attempt was less than 80m and he overstepped for a foul. Meanwhile, Peters delivered a great performance right from the start as he registered the distance of 90.21m in his very first attempt in the final. Neeraj Chopra made a steady move with a throw of 82.39m in his next attempt but it was not good enough to bag a medal. However, the Indian athlete surprised everyone in his third attemt with his improved figures of 86.37 to move closer to the podium. His best throw of the final came in the fourth attempt as he touched an impressive distance of 88.13m to surpass the likes of Jakub Vadlejch and Julian Weber and moved to the second spot.

Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal in the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships 2022 makes him the first Indian man to win a medal at the showpiece event. It is also India’s first ever silver medal at the World Athletics Championships. The absence of Neeraj Chopra from the Commonwealth Games 2022 will be a huge blow from Indian contingent as the nation was heavily banking on him for a medal finish.
