Chess Olympiad 2022: All you need to know- Venue, format, schedule, prizes, mascot and more

The world’s biggest chess event, the 44th International Chess Olympiad, is just days away as the event is scheduled to take place from 28 July to 10  August. The tournament will be hosted in Poonjeri Village in Mamallapuram, a UNESCO heritage site, located about 50 kilometres from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. 

The event will see the highest participation as a record 187 countries are taking part with 188 Teams in the Open section and 162 in the Women’s section. A record total of 30 Indian Players across six teams (three in open and three women) will be participating at the Olympiad.

What is the venue for the 44th International Chess Olympiad?

The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held hosted by the Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre. The resort is located on the East Coast Road, Chennai. 

What is the format for the 44th International Chess Olympiad?

All the matches at the 44th International Chess Olympiad will be played in the Classical Swiss League Format.

What is the schedule for the 44th International Chess Olympiad?

The tournament will start with ‘Round 1’ on 29 July and will continue till ‘Round 11’ on 9 August. There will be a rest day on 4 August and teams will depart on 10 August. All the games will start at 3:00 PM IST.

What are the prizes for the 44th International Chess Olympiad?

The Olympiad presents team and individual non-monetary prizes:

1st place in the Open section: Hamilton-Russell Cup 

1st place in the Women’s section: Vera Menchik Cup 

1st place in combined classification: Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy 

Players from the top-three teams also receive team medals: 

1st place: Gold medal 

2nd place: Silver medal 

3rd place: Bronze medal

India-1 Open team – Vidit Gujrathi, P.Harikrishna, Arjun Erigaisi, S.L. Narayan and Sasikaran Krishnan.  

India-2 Open team – Nihal Sarin, D.Gukesh, B.Adhiban, R. Praggnanandhaa and Raunak Sadhwani.  

India-3 open team – Surya Shekhar Ganguly, S.P. Sethuraman, Abhijeet Gupta, Karthikeyan Murali and Abhimanyu Puranik.

India-1 women’s team – Koneru Humpy, D.Harika, R.Vaishali, Tania Sachdev and Bhakti Kulkarni. T

Who is the mascot for the 44th International Chess Olympiad?

The 44th Chess Olympiad has unveiled the official logo and mascot for the event. The Mascot is a chess knight called Thambi.
