MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings had 48 crores to spend in the mega auction and the Tamil Nadu-based franchise spent every penny cautiously. They did not involve in unwanted bidding and kept composure just like their captain does. Chennai already had an opener in form of Ruturaj Gaikwad, so they went after a few openers.

CSK management stayed in the bidding war for Quinton de Kock for a while, but they opted out.  CSK already have two of the best spin bowling all-rounders in form of Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja were already in CSK's pocket, so they did not bother themselves by going after similar players. Not to everyone's surprise, CSK management went bonkers after Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar.

They also managed to get two of their ex-players back in the hut as they bought Dwayne Bravo for 4.4 Crores while the final's hero Uthappa was bought for 2 Crores. CSK management once again showed faith in their ex-players as they went as far as possible to get Deepak Chahar and Ambati Rayudu.

CSK went after some new players at the auction as they got all-rounder Shivam Dube and Maheesh Theekshana on Day 2.
