The sudden demise of the sporting icon Milkha Singh on Friday has shaken everyone. The ‘Flying Sikh’ passed away at the age of 92 owing to post-Covid complications. He was admitted to the ICU of Mohali's Fortis hospital due to "COVID pneumonia" on May 24. He was then moved to PGIMER in Chandigarh on June 3. The sprinter tested negative on Wednesday, however his condition got severe on Friday including high fever and dipping oxygen saturation levels. “It is with extreme sadness that we would like to inform you that Milkha Singh Ji passed away. He fought hard, but God has his ways, and it was perhaps true love and companionship that both our mother Nirmal Ji and now Dad have passed away in a matter of 5 days,” Milkha Singh’s family expressed in a media statement.

Cricket fraternity pays tribute to the legendary athlete

Following the national sporting legend’s demise, many cricketers paid their tributes and mourned his demise.

“Your demise has left a deep void in every Indian's heart today, but you shall keep inspiring several generations to come," tweeted Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah regarded Mr Singh as a legend and inspiration while paying tribute to the sporting icon

Indian head coach Ravi Shastri hailed Milkha Singh for his determination while paying condolences.

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag called the sprinter a symbol of courage and will-power.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant termed him as an icon and inspiration.
