The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) and elections on September 18 at its headquarters in Mumbai. This will potentially include the appointment of members to the IPL Governing Council and is expected to be one of the key issues. The board has asked its member associations to nominate their representatives for the electoral roll. The deadline for submitting the applications is August 31 while the draft electoral roll will be published on September 1. Those looking to contest the elections can file their nominations on September 9 and 10 between 11 am and 4 pm.
The final list of candidates will be released on September 12 before voting takes place on September 18. The results will also be announced on the same day. The new board will also have to choose two representatives for the IPL Governing Council. One representative from the Indian Cricketers Association is expected to be inducted into the IPL governing body. Another important issue on the agenda will be the appointment of the BCCI’s representative or representatives to the International Cricket Council (ICC). The appointments will be important as they will have a bearing on the administration of Indian cricket as well as the running of the IPL.
Arun Dhumal expected to continue as IPL chairman: Reports
Arun Singh Dhumal is expected to continue as Chairman of the Indian Premier League after the BCCI formally initiated the election process for two positions on the IPL Governing Council ahead of its Annual General Meeting on September 18. Dhumal who represents Himachal Pradesh and Khairul Jamal Majumdar who is from Mizoram currently occupy the two IPL Governing Council positions that are filled through elections from the BCCI general body. Both are expected to be re-elected unopposed ensuring continuity in the leadership of the league. The other two general body representatives on the seven-member council are BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and treasurer Raghuram Bhat. The remaining members are the BCCI CEO, an Indian Cricketers Association representative and a CAG nominee.
BCCI Electoral Officer AK Joti has issued the election notification for the two IPL Governing Council positions under Rule 28 of the BCCI Constitution. The two elected members from the general body serve one-year terms and are required to seek re-election at the AGM. The AGM is also expected to take up a proposal to grant associate membership to the Cricket Association of Andaman & Nicobar. The Union Territory does not currently have any formal affiliation with the BCCI. If the proposal is approved, it would give the BCCI its first formal administrative link with organised cricket in Andaman & Nicobar.
