After a slow start to IPL 2026, losing three matches consecutively, lingering at the bottom of the points table, CSK have fought back hard to be at the fifth spot in the points table with 12 points and alive in the tournament to secure a top-four spot. But unfortunately their loss against LSG on Friday, May 15th has jeopardised their spot in Top Four, slipping them further in the table.
With a loss they have slipped to sixth position with Rajasthan Royals jumping above them. Times have become desperate for the Ruturaj Gaikwad as they anyhow have to win next two games to qualify and that too will depend on few other wins and losses by other IPL teams. In this article, we take a look at how CSK can qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
How can CSK qualify for IPL 2026 Playoffs?
As of May 16, 2026, Chennai Super Kings(CSK) are positioned at the 6th spot in points table with 12 points in total. If CSK can win two out of the three matches, they will finish on 16 points, wherein the Net Run Rate could come into play to decide their position. If CSK only win one of their three remaining matches, then the Super Kings might get out of the top four, depending on the wins of Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals.
CSK would next lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans to fight their way towards qualification.
CSK must win all remaining matches
CSK vs SRH - CSK Win- 18th May
CSK vs GT - CSK win- 21st May
Not only that their fate is also in the hands of other teams as that would hugely effect their qualification chances because winning only at this point is not enough in the over crowded IPL 2026 points table.
Other teams’ scenarios that could help CSK qualify:
Qualify with 16 points:
-
RCB vs PBKS - RCB wins
-
PBKS and RR should only win one game
Qualify with 14 points:
-
PBKS and RR don’t win a single game
-
KKR beat DC but lose one of the other two games against GT and MI
Finally, everything comes down directly to CSK's performance on May 15th, because their NRR took a massive downfall after the LSG game, finishing on 14 points will inevitably lead to a tie-breaker. If they lose to SRH but beat GT, or vice versa, that single victory needs to be dominant - either chasing a target within fewer overs or defending a total by a massive run margin. Only then CSk can come into permutations and combinations to be at the Top Four.
