Cricket is cricket. At the end of the day as well as at the beginning of it all. It’s a sport. A competitive one at that, which includes the talismanic and trailblazing talent with the bat, ball and with efforts on the ground. It’s as simple as that. Except, it isn’t just that- apparently- from what’s evident in instances like the crowd skirmish in contests featuring the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru spectators and what happens in the stands. For one doesn’t quite know how to else to put it. A recent episode featuring the most recent contest involving the spectacular southern sides has left a bitter aftertaste and perhaps for no apparent reason for there was nothing harsh and not even borderline toxic between the cricketers.

So what was it?

A fresh controversy has emerged in the Indian Premier League, this time involving the in-stadium DJ during the high-profile clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The issue revolves around the use of a popular “Dosa, idli, sambar, chutney” track, which was played during the match. The song, often used in social media memes, has been criticised for promoting South Indian stereotypes. CSK felt the timing and context of the song, along with certain remarks made over the public address system, crossed the line from light-hearted entertainment to disrespect.

Following the match, CSK officially raised the matter with the BCCI, stating that such actions created an uncomfortable environment for players and fans alike.

The franchise maintained that while home teams are expected to have crowd support, targeting opposition players or their cultural identity is not acceptable.

A controversy that never should have taken place Interestingly, the controversy also has a backstory linked to Chepauk. Last season, a similar song was played at CSK’s home ground when an RCB player was dismissed, which was then seen as playful banter.

However, CSK later introduced stricter guidelines to ensure that DJs avoid making remarks aimed at opposition players. This latest incident has once again raised questions about where to draw the line between fan engagement and maintaining respect in the game.

What now?

With the matter now under review, it remains to be seen whether the league will step in with clearer rules for in-stadium conduct.

But having said that a thing can be said for certain. And it’s that when the two teams clash the next time around, there won’t be any relaxation among their fans whatsoever. Because one knows the competitive nature of the league that is the IPL.
