A big blow to the Johannesburg Super Kings as their captain Faf Du Plessis has been ruled out of the remainder of the season due to injury. The decision comes after he sustained a thumb injury during a match against MI Cape Town on January 10. The team management confirmed that du Plessis suffered a right thumb ligament tear that will require surgical repair. Joburg Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming had indicated in the post match that Faf du Plessis’ SA20 season might be over, following a thumb injury while fielding.
Faf du Plessis was injured while fielding and had to watch from the dressing room as his side went down to MI Cape Town by 36 runs at the Wanderers as he could not come out to bat in a massive 234 run chase. Stephen Fleming also confirmed after the match that du Plessis thumb was so bad that he could not even hold a bat, and he has started preparing for the worst. Johannesburg Super Kings are currently holding onto the third position on this season’s SA20 points table with 17 points. The team has won three out of their five matches in this edition.
Joburg Super Kings have extended their full support to the skipper. “All our love with you, skipper. Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the remainder of the SA20 season after suffering a right thumb ligament tear, requiring surgical repair. Our best wishes are with you,” read an official statement. Faf Du Plessis managed 135 runs in five innings this season at an average of 27.00 and an impressive strike rate of 151.68. While his returns were good, his experience and leadership played a crucial role in guiding the squad through key moments. The 41 year old will now be unavailable for the rest of the season and in his absence Donovan Ferreira is expected to captain JSK for the remainder of the season.
