Glen Maxwell, one of the most dangerous T20 batters in the whole world, is likely to take his retirement from international cricket after the Australia vs Oman match on Friday, 20 February, at the T20 World Cup 2026. The former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting, hinted that Maxwell's career is coming to an end and predicted his last against Oman. The 37-year-old has scored 62 runs in 3 matches of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.

Glenn Maxwell likely to announce retirement from International Cricket after match vs Oman

Australia is already eliminated from the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 from the group stage. This group stage exit is embarrassing for the team that dominates world cricket in multinational tournaments. Glenn Maxwell is one of the key players in the team, but he has not been able to perform up to his usual standards. His repeated failures in the middle order have created problems for the team’s overall performance and put extra pressure on the rest of the batting lineup.

Now, the Australian former World Cup-winning captain reckoned that Maxwell’s career is coming to an end, and he predicted he won't be part of Australia’s team for the LA28 Olympics.

Speaking to ICC, Ponting said, “Glenn Maxwell, I don’t think, will be there. I think it looks to me like his career is coming towards an end."

Maxwell played 3 matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 and scored 62 runs with an average of 20.66 and a strike rate of 110.71. He scored 9 runs off 9 balls against Ireland, 31 runs off 32 balls against Zimbabwe, and 22 off 15 in a crucial game against Sri Lanka.

After losing the last two games against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, Australia is now out of the 2026 T20 World Cup. This group stage exit is expected to make a lot of changes in the Australian T20I side, and Maxwell could be the first name in the list.

Australia vs Oman is set to be played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on 20 February 2026.
