Prince Yadav and Suryansh Shedge were handed their international caps for India’s crucial second T20I against Ireland in Belfast, as the team structure underwent tactical alterations following a shocking 34-run defeat in the opening match. Concurrently, the team management decided against debuting 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, opting to rely on veteran options to level the short two-match series.

Shedge, the Mumbai all-rounder was called up to the squad as a late injury replacement for Nitish Kumar Reddy. He arrived with immediate momentum, fresh off a successful stint with India A in the Sri Lanka Tri-Nation Series where he hit a blistering 72 off 66 balls. Prince Yadav brings a heavy ball and variations. Yadav found a place in the side after claiming 16 wickets in the 2026 IPL season, combined with a strong showing during his recent ODI integration against Afghanistan.

Shreyas Iyer directly addressed the overwhelming public demand for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi by highlighting that team selection hinges strictly on immediate situational readiness rather than pure youth cricket credentials. “He’s got tremendous amount of experience in the youth cricket. So definitely he’s performed in the A tours.”

Following Friday's top-order batting collapse, the management felt that dropping established senior players immediately would disrupt squad stability. Iyer made it clear that while Sooryavanshi is a lethal "gun player," the priority remains backing senior squad members who have already established themselves in intense situations. Iyer assured fans that the teenager's omission is strictly tactical, promising, "He will get his chance when the time comes”.

"We want to maximize the advantage": Shreyas Iyer explains decision to bowl first

India's captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first in the second T20I against Ireland at Belfast. With a high threat of rain hanging over the ground, Iyer chose to exploit the overhead conditions immediately. Bowling first minimizes the risk of getting caught on the wrong side of a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) calculation later in the evening.

Additionally, the early moisture and dampness on the surface provide extra lateral movement for India’s fresh-look bowling unit. “We’re going to bowl first considering the weather condition. It can pour any time, so we want to maximize the advantage of it”, the skipper said.

Reflecting on Friday’s 34-run defeat, Iyer noted that the most critical focus for his side moving forward is their mental flexibility, "The challenge is to adapt to the conditions as quickly as possible.” Shreyas Iyer confirmed the tactical integration of youth by presenting caps to Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav. Iyer emphasized that introducing fresh domestic talent provides a layer of unpredictability that can unseat a confident Irish lineup on their home turf, “Yeah, we’ve got two changes. Suryansh shedge comes in and Prince. Both are making the debut”.
