In what may come across as one of the most bizarre developments in the PSL 2026, is that the Lahore Qalandars have appointed their skipper, Fakhar Zaman as the head following his two-match ban because of ball tampering. After the ban was announced, Lahore Qalandars immediately named Zaman as their temporary head coach as he serves the suspension.

This appointment allows him to remain with the squad and provide tactical input despite being ineligible to take the field as a player. The decision has drawn criticism from some quarters of the cricketing community, with observers calling it a "mockery of discipline". Critics argue that appointing a player to a leadership role immediately after a ball-tampering conviction undermines the integrity of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The franchise named him as coach to bypass restrictions that would otherwise distance a suspended player from the squad, allowing him to provide tactical guidance and support to captain Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The franchise's decision to name him coach is seen as a deliberate act of defiance to keep their senior player in the dugout.

Why was Fakhar Zaman banned?

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) upheld a two-match ban on the veteran batter after he was found guilty of a Level 3 offence for "changing the condition of the ball". The incident occurred during a match against Karachi Kings on March 29, 2026, just before the final over. The PSL technical committee rejected his appeal, confirming he would miss games against Multan Sultans (April 3) and Islamabad United (April 9). He is expected to be available for selection again for the match against Peshawar Zalmi on April 11, 2026.

Before the two-match ban, Fakhar Zaman had a productive start to the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL), scoring 54 runs across two matches at a strike rate of 131.70. During this period, he also became the second player in PSL history to cross the 3,000-run milestone. In the first match against the Hyderabad Kings, Zaman scored 53 runs off 39 balls (10 fours). He was awarded the Player of the Match Award for his contribution to the team. While in the second match he managed only 1 run off 2 balls before being dismissed in the first over.
