Former off spinner and legendary game changing talent, Ravichandran Ashwin has been known for speaking his mind and backing his takes with logic to arrive at conclusions. But what the famous cricketer, also known for his exploits in the famous IPL domain, shared most recently in a video episode with a noted cricket journalist, may not necessarily leave Shubman Gill’s fans too chuffed. So the big question is what did Ashwin say that has led to an interesting conversation at the moment?

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently sparked a major discussion among cricket fans after sharing his thoughts on India’s possible batting order for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 during a conversation on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin suggested a surprising combination at the top of the order, stating that veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could still open the batting if they remain fit and in form by the time the tournament arrives. “If Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli open in the 2027 World Cup, then Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer can bat at No. 3 and 4,” Ashwin said.

While the idea itself created interest, the biggest talking point was the absence of Shubman Gill from Ashwin’s projected top order.

Having said the above, it is no surprise that where it comes to the big guns from Team India, then certainly the dazzling duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are keenly eyeing the odi World Cup trophy, it’s something that they desperately await having won several tournaments both at home and abroad.

While both have called time on their respective Test and T20I careers, the Indian Cricket think tank and the players themselves feel that they can still contribute to the fifty over format. Which is where their phenomenal ODI experience also comes into play.

But while Ashwin has had his say, only time will tell whether Shubman Gill, already a double hundred scorer in ODIs, can make it to the team when it comes to the next year’s ODI World Cup.
