Shubman Gill getting dropped from the Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup has been one of the biggest talking points of the day. Fans and Experts are mixed with opinions with majority of the fans happy with the decision while some are against it. Let us look at how twitter reacted to this news.

Gill had gone 18 innings in T20 Internationals without a 50 and missed fifth T20I against South Africa due to a foot injury. Sanju Samson replaced him and impressed in the limited opportunities and made a ‌breezy 37 as Abhishek Sharma’s opening partner.

While Ishan Kishan ‍was recalled after he led Jharkhand’s successful campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, smashing a hundred in Friday’s final against Haryana. He opened the batting for Haryana and could also be an option for both wicket-keeper and opener spot.

Gill was named the vice captain of the T20I side ever since his comeback but his recent struggles meant that the team management could not retain him. In the recent series against South Africa he could only score 4, 0 and 28 in three games against South Africa.

Speaking on his omission, Chief selector Agarkar did not use the word dropped but that is what he meant when he said Gill missed out due to team combination. “Shubman Gill is short of runs at the moment and missed last WC too,” chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said at the press conference. “It’s not about Gill’s form. We wanted to have a keeper at the top,” skipper Suryakumar said on Gill’s omission.

Gill has faced criticism from fans and experts for his performances this year, managing just 291 runs from 15 matches at an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26, without scoring a single fifty. The same 15 member squad will be playing the T20I series against New Zealand which starts on January 21 and then play the WT20 at home which is scheduled to be held from February 7 to March 8. Axar Patel has been appointed vice-captain for the event replacing Gill, while Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh earned a recall following their impressive performances in the domestic circuit.
