Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull didn’t mince his words and shared a bold take on Gujarat Titans’ all-rounder Rahul Tewatia. Doull opined that Tewatia is past his prime and is just playing in the IPL as a safety net. The Kiwi star’s comments came ahead of the Titans’ clash against the Delhi Capitals, which the Titans ended up winning by a narrow margin of 1 run. In the game, Tewatia remained not out at 1 run.
However, coming back to Doull’s comments, the cricketer-turned-commentator said, "They are carrying Rahul Tewatia. I won't even say he is a luxury at No.7 because he is not. He is a safety net that might be okay to get you some runs. He doesn't bowl anymore and is just okay in the field.” Not only this, but Doull added that Tewatia’s time is past and the Titans must get Sai Kishore in his place, who could prove to be a more versatile option for him.
“With all due respect, his time is past in my opinion. You get a Sai Kishore in there, as he gives you a bit more. Getting him in for Tewatia allows your batting to be similar, but it gives you a bowling option and a jet in the field," the former Kiwi pacer added.
Gujarat Titans far from showing champions-like prowess
The Gujarat Titans who wreaked havoc in the first couple of seasons since their inception are far from displaying dominance on the field this season. They suffered two back-to-back losses before taking down the Capitals in their third game. In the first two games, the Shubman Gill-led side suffered a three-wicket loss to the Punjab Kings before going down against the Rajasthan Royals by six runs in the second game.
However, in the third game, they took down the Capitals by a margin of one run in a last-over thriller. The game saw skipper Gill hitting a powerful knock of 70 runs off 45 balls with a combination of four boundaries and five sixes. In addition, Jos Buttler came up with a 27-ball 52 and Washington Sundar recorded a 32-ball 55 run knock.
Up next, they will lock horns with the Lucknow Super Giants in an away game on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
