The Indian Premier League has seen many memorable championship successes as well as nail-biting finishes in the final overs; however, there have been certain franchises that have made a name for themselves through successive failures in the league stages. With each passing year, there have been certain franchises that have made a name for themselves for failing to progress to the next stage despite having certain memorable moments in the past. Inconsistencies in their performance and poor team management in the form of leadership change and improper drafting during auctions have led to such situations. Of all franchises, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals have been particularly notorious for failing to make it to the playoffs.
Being a one-off occurrence at the early stages of the league is quite common when rebuilding teams; however, failing to enter into the playoffs repeatedly in consecutive years indicates serious issues within a particular team.
1. Punjab Kings - 15 Playoff Misses
Punjab Kings have the most number of misses in IPL history when it comes to playing in the playoffs. The franchise has missed the playoffs in as many as 15 seasons out of 18. Even though they made it to the finals in both the 2014 and 2025 seasons, they are still waiting for their first title in IPL.
There have been a lot of times in the past where Punjab has had good starts only to fall off midway through the tournament. Another factor which affected the franchise was frequent change in captains, along with the overhaul of the teams in the mega auctions. Punjab always counted on certain key players, and whenever those stars underperformed, the entire season went down the drain.
2. Delhi Capitals - 12 Playoff Misses
Delhi Capitals have missed the IPL playoffs 12 times, making them one of the league’s most inconsistent franchises. The side also holds the record for the most last-place finishes in IPL history, ending at the bottom in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2018.
Delhi’s struggles largely came from instability behind the scenes. Coaches and captains changed frequently, while the squad rarely stayed together for long periods. Between 2014 and 2018, the franchise failed to reach the playoffs for five straight seasons. There was a short revival between 2019 and 2021 under Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, but the team could not maintain that momentum. Despite being one of the original IPL franchises, Delhi is still searching for its first title.
3. Rajasthan Royals - 9 Playoff Misses
Rajasthan Royals have started their journey in the IPL with a title in the very first season in 2008 under the captaincy of Shane Warne. Unfortunately, they have not been able to sustain their success story and have been eliminated nine times from qualifying for playoffs in the ensuing seasons.
Consistency was lacking in the team since the departure of Shane Warne. In addition, Rajasthan has been facing a two-season suspension since 2016 and 2017 due to certain issues. Over the years, reliance on foreign talent has been the norm for Rajasthan, whereas they have lacked consistency in their middle order in tight games. In spite of reaching the finals in 2022, they have been unable to win any other titles.
