With a combination of youthful exuberance (and enterprise) and strong mental foundations such as discipline and desire to excel, Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett has quietly but assuredly paved the road for his nation’s success in the ongoing mega ICC T20 World Cup. Not a player that commands too many headlines but should definitely be spoken of with an unwavering verse of respect and regard, it is Zimbabwe’s top order soldier with the bat who has cemented a strong foundation for his country as its makes its way to contest in the big key Super 8 stage.
And truth be told, had it not been for the nice natured and gritty 22 year old cricketer, Zimbabwe may not have enjoyed the success they are deservingly a part of as we speak. But praise without substantive evidence is, but bland praise- is it not?
Let us look at some of Brian Bennett’s recent numbers that not only spring to mind the image of a quietly resilient batter but an avid cricketer who seems destined to write his own chapters in international cricket:
But just before we delve into his most recent numbers, perhaps it’s relevant to understand the context to the praise he is ammasing.
Just a few hours ago, post Zimbabwe’s beating Sri Lanka, here’s what a message / post on the Iceland Cricket account said-
“Brian Bennett might be the world's most underrated young cricketer. He can fly and he can bat.
Zimbabwe in sensational form!”
So where was this coming from and why?
With a fine knock of 63 unbeaten runs, Brian Bennett had helped Zimbabwe defeat Sri Lanka, who lest it is forgotten, are the co hosts of this very World Cup.
What’s more?
The unbeaten 63 came at the back of two other dazzling and highly important unbeaten scores- the 64 not out against Australia (a contest in which the Chevrons trumped the Aussies) and the 48 not out against the Oman.
Little wonder then, why they’re calling this to be a high wave on which the Chevrons are riding and perhaps deservingly so!
Zimbabwe have topped their group and courtesy the fine batting contributions from the bat of highly skilled willow wielders such as Brian Bennett, they’ve thumped whoever has challenged their domination in the World Cup contests so far.
To a team led brilliantly by the courageous Sikandar Raza, one to which Muzarabani is a Blessing and which features power hitters like Ryan Burl, having the quiet surety and tirelessness up the order of someone like Brian Bennett helps. And matters greatly!
