The BCCI has officially tightened its grip on player movements and off-field activities during the ongoing 2026 IPL season following a series of alarming reports. A certain senior player had also reportedly stated that he’ll handle the BCCI officials, when the manager advised him to follow the guidelines. It will be a daunting task for team managers as they will have to control the senior players of the squad and there is a chance that they may not pay heed to the protocols. The board has issued strict guidelines for the movements of players as they have to get security clearance, if they are to travel beyond the permitted areas.
“At times, the players use their stature within the team to bend the rules. Once I told a player to host his friends in the lobby restaurant, not in his room. I told him there are some board instructions on such matters. He just snapped: ‘You don’t worry. I will tell the board (officials), if they ask," said an IPL team manager. Permitting third parties in the team hotels is itself a risky factor considering the anti-corruption guidelines. There is a higher probability that the players who are relatively inexperienced will follow the protocols as they might have the innate fear of violating the protocols. The senior high-profile players would be the most difficult of them all to handle.
BCCI stands firm on unauthorized visitors and protocol breaches amidst IPL 2026 controversies
The struggle against these security fears is complex as even players and social media collaborators have reportedly filmed content in sensitive, restricted areas of the hotel. In several instances, visuals from training sessions and private team zones appeared on the personal social media handles. The BCCI views this unregulated digital footprint as a significant anti-corruption risk. Consequently, many franchises have begun downsizing their content units and short-term hires to ensure that all digital output remains within the board's strict guidelines. Such practices are of high risk and they will have to ensure that they do not compromise the integrity of the tournament.
The most striking point from the recent report is the difficulty team managers face when trying to enforce these rules on high-profile athletes. In one notable incident, a senior player was found hosting unauthorized visitors in his hotel room late into the night. When confronted by the ACU, the team management reportedly downplayed the breach, citing the player’s "seniority" as a reason for leniency. This culture of entitlement is further highlighted by an exchange where a player allegedly. A senior player even snapped at a manager who requested he meet guests in the lobby rather than private quarters.
The Indian Premier League is growing in terms of richness and it is also causing some significant issues in the standards of the game. This season has faced several protocol breaches with incidents of vaping and other sensitive issues. The board is struggling to ensure the standard of the tournament and these strict guidelines could play a major part in it.
