Manpreet Singh-led India made a winning start to their 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign as they thrashed Ghana 11-0 in their first Group B fixture. Having scored a goal in the first minute of the first quarter, India never looked back and kept on scoring goals till the very last minute of the game. Almost every player scored a goal for India but the star was Harmanpreet Singh with his hat-trick.
The Indian defender scored goals in the 10th, 35th, and 53rd minutes to complete a hat-trick. Abhishek opened India’s account with a field goal early in the first quarter. Harmanpreet Singh then chipped in with a goal in the 10th minute to take India’s lead to 2-0. The third goal also came shortly for India when Shamsher Singh scored a field goal just before the end of the first quarter (14’).
The second quarter also began on a high for India as Akashdeep Singh scored a goal in the 20th minute. Shortly after the fourth goal, Jugraj Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 22nd minute to bring the fifth goal. The 5-0 lead stayed intact till the end of the second quarter. The Men in Blue came refreshed after the halftime break and Harmanpreet Singh scored the sixth goal for India as he converted a penalty corner in the 35th minute.
After Harmanpreet’s goal, Varun Kumar and Nilakanta Sharma scored for India to make it 8-0 in the 39th minute. India kept on piling on Ghana’s misery as Jugraj Singh (43′) and Mandeep Singh (48′) scored in quick succession to make it 10-0 for India. The final goal was scored in the 53rd minute by Harmanpreet Singh who also completed his hattrick.
