CWG 2022 Lawn Bowls: India beat New Zealand 16-13 to enter final in Women’s Fours

The Indian quartet of Lovely Choubey (lead), Pinki (second), Nayanmoni Saikia (third) and Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip) beat New Zealand to enter the final of the Women’s Fours in the ongoing CWG 2022. The Indian women’s team defeated the New Zealand side with a score of 16-13. With this win, India has secured a medal in the event at the ongoing Games.

The Kiwis started the fixture on an incredible note as they took a 5-0 lead after two rounds. Indians finally got their first point in the next end, but New Zealand’s Selina Goddard, Nicole Toomey, Tayla Bruce and Val Smith soon regained a five-point gap with a 6-1 lead after four rounds.

Here the Indian team began their comeback, as they registered six straight points in the next four ends to take a 7-6 lead after eight rounds. In the tenth end, Indians bagged three points to take a 10-7 lead, but New Zealand strongly retaliated with three points of their own in the eleventh end to level the score with four rounds to go. Kiwis then took two points in the twelfth end and took a 12-10 lead. But the rollercoaster continued as India then earned two points in the next end to take the score 12-12.

Then India once again slipped back as the Kiwis took a 12-13 lead going into the final end. Here India’s second, Pinki had two incredible throws as victory was in sight. Saikia built on the moment tum created by Pinki and had an excellent throw, but New Zealand came back with a magical throw to deny India’s three closest balls to the jack. Rupa Rani Tirkey then knocked New Zealand’s closest ball away as India’s chances to win surged up once again. Then Tirkey managed to secure the medal with the final throw which earned four points and made the score 16-13.

As the Indian fours’ team registered their victory, the quartet of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey embraced each other with tears of joy to celebrate a historic day.

Earlier on Sunday, The Indian Lawn Bowls men’s pairs team of Dinesh Kumar and Sunil Bahadur entered the quarterfinals of their event after registering a win over England in their Section C match. The Indian duo registered an 18-15 victory over the table toppers.
