CWG 2022: Trisha Chetty ruled out of Birmingham Games with back injury

South Africa Women cricket team will miss the services of prominent trio in Marizanne Kapp, Tumi Sekhukhune and Trisha Chetty in highly-competitive tournament.

What comes as major blow to South African Women’s cricket team is their wicketkeeper-batter Trisha Chetty has been ruled of the inaugural edition of Women’s T20 competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Chetty misses out from CWG 2022 after suffering a back injury. She has reportedly returned home from the Momentum Proteas camp following an extensive tour to the United Kingdom.

Earlier, two more prominent member of the South African squad were left out as Marizanne Kapp remain at home in Gqeberha for family reasons which also kept her out of the 3-match  T20I series against England after producing stellar performance throughout the tour.

The right-arm seamer Tumi Sekhukhune will also miss the Commonwealth Games 2022 as she is still coping with a recurrent groin injury ahead of the 3rd one-day international between South Africa and the English side earlier this month. Reportedly, three players will be replaced by an all-rounder Delmi Tucker and top-order batter Tazmin Brits, who are already with the 14-players travelling to Birmingham.

South Africa will kick start their CWG campaign on Saturday (30 July) against New Zealand, followed by match against England on 2nd August and its league stage will concluded with contest against Sri Lanka on 4th August.  South Africa has been placed in  Group B alongside New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka, while Group A consist teams like Indian, Australia, Pakistan and Barabados. Notably, this will be the inaugural edition of women cricketers at Commonwealth Games.
