Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat clinched the gold medal in the Women’s Freestyle 53kg as she beat her Sri Lankan opponent 4-0 in her third match of the Nordic round. Phogat remained undefeated in the entire round and hence was declared the winner in the category. Phogat defeated Chamdoya Keshani by fall. Notably, it's Phogat's third consecutive CWG gold.

It was a Victory by fall for the Indian wrestler as she pinned down Chamodya Keshani Maduravalage Don in two minutes and 24 seconds at the Coventry Arena Wrestling Mat B. Phogat was extremely dominant in the first period and did not let her opponent score. The Indian grappler took a 4-0 lead in the first period by pinning and rolling her opponent out of the ring.

The 27-year-old looked aggressive from the second go as she grabbed Don's legs pretty early. Phogat then rolled her twice to gain four points and eventually managed to pin her down to the mat to win the gold medal. Phogat finished the nordic round with 13 classification points (6 ahead of the silver medallist).

Earlier, Phogat made a winning start to her Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign with a win over Canada's Samantha Stewart in her women's freestyle 53 kg category - Nordic round. Phogat's match lasted for just 36 seconds. She won the match via fall by 2-0. Stewart could not even manage a minute's worth of in-mat time as she was toppled by the Indian quickly.

The Indian then defeated Nigeria's Mercy Bolaufunoluwa Adekuoroye in her second match to extend her lead over the others in the category. Phogat won her second match 6-0 (victory by points).
