Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won the silver medal in the Women’s 55 kg final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Saturday. Her combined lift was 202 kg. Bindyarani Devi started with a successful 81 kg snatch in her first attempt.

She then went on to lift 84 kg in her second attempt and concluded the snatch round with a 86 kg lift. In the Clean and Jerk session, she lifted 110 kg in her first attempt. Bindyarani had a difficult second attempt for 114 kg but successfully lifted the weight. In her final attempt of 116 kg, she lifted it with ease and bagged the silver medal for India.

After winning the Silver, Bindyarani was extremely elated with her performance and labelled it as her all-time best showing.  But still, she feels that the gold slipped out of her hands. "I am very happy with my performance."

"I am playing in the first games of my career and I am very happy that I won the silver medal in this," said Bindyarani Devi. "I'm very happy to get a silver in the first time of playing CWG. Today was my life's best performance... gold slipped out of my hand. When I was at the podium, I wasn't at the centre, will do better next time."

Talking about her future endeavours, Bindyarani Devi promised to give the 100% and win medals at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. "My next targets are national games, World Championship, Asian Games and then the 2024 Paris Olympics. I'll do better in them," said Bindyarani Devi.

After her victory, Bindyarani received a lot of praise from the entire country including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He congratulated the weightlifter for winning a silver medal and emphasised that this achievement 'is a manifestation of her tenacity' and it has made every Indian very happy and proud.

"Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi for winning a Silver medal at CWG, Birmingham. This accomplishment is a manifestation of her tenacity and it has made every Indian very happy. I wish her the very best for her future endeavours," tweeted PM Modi on Sunday morning.
