CWG 2022 Wrestling: Deepak Punia beats Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam to clinch gold medal

Punia took the early lead of 3 points in the first round against the CWG 2010 and 2018 wrestling gold medallist Inam.

Indian wrestler Deepak Punia defeated Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam 3-0 in the finals to clinch men’s 86kg freestyle wrestling gold at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Deepak Punia bagged third gold for India in wrestling event at the CWG 2022.

Punia took the early lead of two points in the first two minutes of the event against the CWG 2010 and 2018 wrestling gold medallist Inam. With the win, Deepak Punia clinched gold medal on his CWG debut.

While Deepak Punia beat Canada’s Alexander Moore 3-1 to enter the finals, Muhammad Inam defeated Edward Lessing of South Africa to qualify for the men’s 86 kg category wrestling final in the Birmingham Games 2022.

Deepak Punia won the third gold medal for the Indian contingent in wrestling and took India on the fifth spot in the overall medal tally. Apart from him, Bajrang Punia (men’s 65 kg category) and Sakshi Malik (women’s 62 kg category) are the two gold medallists for India in wrestling at the Birmingham Games.
