With Team India set to travel to Sri Lanka with a new-look squad for the white-ball series, they might still be without the services of their star middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer. The 26-year-old had sustained a shoulder injury during the first ODI against England on March 23. Following his injury, the BCCI had stated, "Shreyas Iyer subluxated (partially dislocated) his left shoulder in the 8th over while fielding. He has been taken for further scans."

The scans had revealed that the injury was quite serious and surgery was required. Therefore, Iyer successfully underwent shoulder surgery on April 8 and had then promised his fans that he will return to action soon.

Why is the Mumbai cricketer expected to miss SL tour?

After Iyer was ruled out of IPL 2021, it was mentioned that he would need some months to completely recover from the injury. The 26-year-old will want to spend some time at NCA to undergo rehab before making his comeback for India. With the series scheduled to take place in July, it might just be a little too early for Iyer to return to competitive cricket.

As reported by Sportstar, BCCI's medical staff, the team management and the national selectors are aiming to keep Iyer injury-free and fresh for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Hence, the fans might have to wait for the much-anticipated return of the Mumbai batsman on the field of cricket once again.

However, Iyer could well be seen playing for India before the mega event in October. The Men in Blue are expected to play a couple of bilateral series in September leading to the World Cup and the star batsman might be fit to play by that time.
