Eldhose Paul became the first Indian triple jumper to qualify for the finals of the World Athletics Championships. The 25-year-old registered 16.68m to qualify for the final at the 12th and final position. Paul started with a jump of mere 16.12m in his first attempt, before he improved his tally by clocking it to 16.68m in his second attempt.

His figures in the second jump which earned him the qualification for the finals of World Athletics Championship, took him to the 10th position in the overall standings for a brief period before he was pushed down to 12th. He finished 6th in the Group A qualification round and 12th overall to make the cut for Sunday's final. Paul, who reached Eugene just a few days ago due to visa issues, has also registered season's and personal best of 16.99m which he had touched while bagging gold in the Federation Cup in April.

Earlier, German's Max Heb failed to improve his best figures of 16.64m. The other Indians, Praveen Chitravel and Abdulla Aboobacker, had a disappointing outing at the Hayward Field as Chitravel clocked 16.49m to finish 17th, while Aboobacker clocked 16.45m to finish 19th. Those who cleared 17.05m or the 12 best performers across two qualification round groups qualify for the finals.
