In a recent development, England have decided to sack head coach Chris Silverwood following an embarrassing Ashes defeat against Australia. The Joe Root-led side could not put up a fight except for the fourth Test match where they were successful in managing a draw. Otherwise, the Three Lions were not up to the mark as they lost the five-match series 0-4.

Earlier, England’s Director of Cricket Ashley Giles was also shown the exit door. After the decision was made, Silverwood has expressed his pleasure in serving as the head coach of the English side.

“It’s been an absolute honour to be England Head Coach, and I’m extremely proud to have worked alongside our players and staff. I want to thank them all for the hard work and commitment they have given during my time in the role and I wish them all the very best moving forward,” said Silverwood as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“The last two years have been very demanding but I have really enjoyed my time with the team and working with Rooty and Morgs, and I am very proud of this group considering the challenges. I leave with fond memories and I am now looking forward to spending some quality time at home with my family and embracing the next chapter,” he added.

The next assignment for the England cricket team will be the Test matches against the West Indies set to commence on March 8. While the England side have been a force to reckon with in Limited-overs cricket, winning the 2019 ODI World Cup and entering the T20 World Cup last year as one of the favourites, losing in the semifinals, they haven’t replicated the same success in Test match cricket.

Other than their defeat in the Ashes, they are also trailing to India in the home Test series which will reach its climax last year. Before that, even New Zealand beat England 1-0 in the two-match Test series before the World Test Championship final last year. In view of these disappointing results, several England cricketers have decided to focus on Test cricket for a while and raise their level of performance.
