Preview:

25 years after their infamous clash at Euro 96, England and Germany are set to write a new chapter in their rivalry when they meet for their Euro 2020 Round of 16 match at the Wembley Stadium in London on Tuesday. While the Three Lions reached this stage of the competition after securing a first-place finish from Group D, Germany themselves secured a second spot from the Group of Death Group F in this edition of the competition.

Team News:

England

The duo of Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell were forced to self-isolate after they came into close contact with COVID-positive Billy Gilmour. Despite both these players returning negative tests, they were asked to quarantine and Gareth Southgate is unlikely to include either of these players in the side given that they will come out on match day. Other than that, there aren’t any major injury or availability concerns for them.

Germany

As far as Germany is concerned, coach Joachim Low has only one injury concern to deal with as Lukas Klostermann is likely to be sidelined with a thigh injury. Moreover, Jonas Hofmann is fit but is unlikely to be rushed into the Starting XI.

Analysis:

Harry Kane hasn’t been in the best of form so far in this tournament but then there wouldn’t be a better occasion to rediscover himself and find his midas touch. It will help that the Germany defence hasn’t been very strong in the tournament so far as they have leaked cheap goals. If Germany need to proceed to the next round, they will have to find form and prove their worth as serious contenders for the Euro 2020 title.

Given that this is a must-win match and how both teams are known for their winning mentality and bringing out their best game in crunch situations, things hint towards a tight game than what it might appear on the first glance. It would be interesting to see which side takes a step closer to the title.

Probable Starting XI:

England:

Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Rice, Phillips, Foden, Grealish, Sterling, Kane

Germany:

Neuer, Ginter, Hummels, Rudiger, Kimmich, Kroos, Goretzka, Gosens, Havertz, Muller, Gnabry
