Preview:

Spain are all set to begin their Euro 2020 campaign locking horns with Sweden in their tournament opener. Both the teams are missing out on two key players, since they have tested positive for COVID-19. However, given the strength in the squads, the managers of the teams will have a good amount of options to choose from. The two sides also faced each other twice during the qualifying phase, with Spain edging their opponents with a 4-2 aggregate. With the likes of Spain, Poland and Slovakia in Group E, Sweden will be wary of suffering in case of a poor result in their opener, given that there is no room for an easy match in the competitive group.

Team News:

Spain- Sergio Busquets and Diego Llorente will be the two big misses for Spain, as both players have been tested positive for COVID-19.

Sweden- Just like Spain, Sweden too will be missing Dejan Kulusevski and Mattias Svanberg as the players are COVID positive.

Analysis:

Luis Enrique’s Spain head into the Euros following a goalless draw against Portugal in the international friendly game ahead of the European Championship. Besides, La Roja were forced to field their Under-21s against Lithuania, since their first team had to isolate themselves following Busquets's positive test. However, Spain’s Under 21 smashed the opponents in a whopping 4-0 win. Spain have dominated the Euros alongside rivals Germany, winning it thrice – in 1964, 2008 and 2012. Luis Enrique’s side would look forward to adding another trophy to their glassware, becoming the sole most successful team of the European Championship.

Sweden enter the Euro 2020 with full of confidence, having won both their international friendlies against Finland and Armenia ahead of the European Championship. The Swedes have been eliminated right in the group stages in the last 3 tournaments and will look forward to making it to the knockouts this time. With both the teams missing out on 2 key players each due to COVID, and Sweden having an edge given their unbeaten run, it’ll be an interesting game to see Enrique’s men taking on Anderson’s squad.
