Sergio Reguilon asks referee to stop the match

The Premier League witnessed a scary incident on Sunday which left the whole football fraternity in shock for some time. With Newcastle United and Tottenham playing a thrilling encounter at St. James Park, Sergio Reguilon brought the attention of referee Andre Marriner to a medical emergency required in the East Stand of the stadium.

As per information which has been revealed, someone in the crowd required a defibrillator and the club doctor of Newcastle United - Paul Catterson (after being alerted by Eric Dier) was quick to react to the situation as he reached on time with required help. “The supporter who was in need of urgent medical assistance has been stabilised and is on their way to hospital. Our thoughts are with them,” Newcastle tweeted.

Match was temporarily suspended by referee

Although the players waited patiently for around 7 minutes, the match referee decided to take the players into the dressing room considering the urgency of the situation, after consultation with police officers and stewards.

There was a stoppage of around 20 minutes more and only when it was confirmed that the condition of fan had been stabilised and it was revealed that he was being taken to hospital, the players returned on the field to complete the first half.

Reflecting on the incident, Tottenham player Sergio Reguilon revealed the sequence of events after the match. He said, “The fans say: ‘Stop, stop!’… I saw the fan lying down, and one man [giving him CPR], I was very nervous. I went to the referee and said we cannot play, stop the match”.

The 24-year-old Spanish full-back was praised by the whole football fraternity for his prompt action, which might have possibly saved someone's life.

Tottenham went on to win the match 3-2

The two sides quickly recovered from the incident to produce a sensational football match on the field. Tottenham, who were leading 2-1 before the stoppage, scored the 3rd goal through Son Heung-min at the stroke of half-time. In the second half, Newcastle showed lot of courage and a late own goal by Eric Dier made things quite exciting but Harry Kane-led side held their nerves to take three points.
