Indian women’s team registered a sensational 4-0 victory over the USA team in their last league fixture of the FIH Pro League 2022.

The first two quarters resulted in both the teams being competitive in their gameplay but lost their due chances to score off the penalty corners, and the score line read 0-0.

In the fourth minute of the third quarter, India again failed to convert the penalty corner into a goal. With their attacking mindset, Savita Punia-led Indian side maintained optimum pressure on the opposition. With close to six minutes and thirty seconds left in the third quarter, Gurjit Kaur took the injection in a perfect manner and darted a shot, which Vandana Katariya deflected to the far end of the post, and India led 1-0.

The attack continued, but the Women in Blue missed by a whisker to score a goal in the last few minutes of the quarter. The USA team also received a penalty corner, but it was an aimless shot that went above the goal post.

In the fourth quarter, things went ahead in a neutral manner. But at the brink of the seventh minute, India was at their absolute best to score a field goal, with Katariya making full use of gaps created by the USA team.

A few seconds later, the perfect partnership between the Indian players in passing the balls and maintaining possession helped them to lead by 3-0, with Sonika as the goal scorer.

In the next minute, the USA team could not score a goal off the penalty corner. However, the Punia-led side was impressive with their long-ball, which left only one defender and goalkeeper of the opposition team, and Sangita scored a terrific fourth goal for the team.

The Indian women’s team secured the third position in the points table with six wins in 14 league matches and won the bronze medal.
