England defeated Andorra 2-0 in the World Cup qualifier at the Villa Park in Birmingham with an own goal from Christian Garcia, followed by a Declan Rice header on Saturday, September 6. Despite a laboured performance from England against a lower-ranked side, 174th on the FIFA Rankings, their head coach Thomas Tuchel talked about how is convinced that his team is “on the right path” and how they are “getting there”.
As far as stats for the recently concluded match against Andorra go, in comparison with 1-0 victory over them earlier in June, England had fewer shots at goal, 11 to 20, while the touches inside the opposition box were less too, 41 to 52. Thomas Tuchel stated that “it was a good performance, a solid performance against a low block”, while admitting that they didn’t convert a lot of the chances created in the World Cup qualifier.
I'm absolutely convinced that we are on the right path: Thomas Tuchel on his England side
Notably, in his coaching tenure with England men’s football team, Thomas Tuchel has seen them win four straight competitive matches, although they lost to Senegal at home in a friendly by 3-1. As far as analysing the progress of his team, the German, who has already managed Chelsea and Bayern Munich in club football, remarked, “We're getting there. There's a lot of learning for me. International football is so different to club football.”
“I'm absolutely convinced that we are on the right path. We have three camps very close to show that we will create an identity and see who has a connection with who,” he added. The next outing for England is scheduled to happen against Serbia on Tuesday, September 10, at the Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade, which will also be a World Cup qualifier.
Although the performance from England might not be up to their lofty standards, they have managed to win their four World Cup qualifier matches, which will give them the confidence to continue the momentum going forward.
