On Friday, August 22, Ruben Dias, the Manchester City defender, 28, signed a two-year contract extension with the club as his previous deal was due to run out in 2027. It means that the Portuguese international will now continue to play for Manchester City until 2029 and his stay could get extended for another 12 months if the club decides to take the option down the road.

Notably, after joining Manchester City from Benfica in 2020 on a £65 million transfer fee, Ruben Dias delivered the goods instantly for the club, becoming the Premier League player of the year in his first season. Since then, he has been a part of many title wins at Manchester City, including four Premier Leagues, one UEFA Champions League, one FA Cup, and one League Cup during his five-year tenure.

I love Manchester - it is my home now - and I love the Manchester City fans: Ruben Dias

In his first comments after signing a contract extension, Ruben Dias was quite happy before talking about how he loves Manchester and the City fans. He was quoted as saying to the club website, “I am incredibly happy today. I love Manchester - it is my home now - and I love the Manchester City fans. When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn't imagine playing anywhere else.”

With the confirmation of Ruben Dias immediate future in Manchester City colours, the club will now shift their attention on players like John Stones, Ilkay Gundogan, Ederson, and Bernardo Silva, who have only around a year left on their current contracts. With these players forming the core of the team under Pep Guardiola, it will be interesting to see how many of them will stay at the club next season.

Moreover, after registering a 4-0 win over Wolves away from home to start off the Premier League season in style, Manchester City will welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, August 23.
