Ederson Moraes is said to be an integral part of Manchester City’s dominance since joining from Benfica in 2017 for £30 million. With 168 clean sheets in 372 appearances, he has contributed to six Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League triumph. However, with his contract entering its final year, expiring in June 2026, and the arrival of James Trafford from Burnley for £27 million, speculation about Ederson’s departure has intensified. Galatasaray’s reported pursuit, coupled with City’s reported interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, has fueled debate about whether the Brazilian’s time at the Etihad Stadium is nearing an end.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has added fresh intrigue to the ongoing speculations surrounding goalkeeper Ederson Moraes’ future, as the summer transfer window approaches its final days. Speaking ahead of City’s Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on August 23, Guardiola remained non-committal about the Brazilian’s status, stating, “We’ll see tomorrow. Because until after the Brighton game… the transfer window is over, and after we can say: ok, it’s done. Now everything is: What’s going to happen?”

Reports claim that Guardiola’s statements follow the £8.5 million bid by Galatarasay which is said to be rejected by City, holding out for a significantly higher fee.

Ederson Moraes was absent from Manchester City’s 4-0 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers in season opener

It is said that Guardiola’s comments reflect the uncertainty surrounding Ederson Moraes’s situation. Reportedly, the manager has consistently maintained that Ederson remains his first-choice goalkeeper, but his absence from City’s season-opening 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16, officially attributed to gastroenteritis, raised eyebrows. However, Ederson’s absence from the Wolves match, has spotlighted City’s goalkeeping depth. Apart from the 22-year-old James Trafford, Stefan Ortega, who famously saved a crucial shot against Tottenham’s Heung-Min Son in 2024, is also said to be a reliable option.

Reports claim that Manchester City are seeking a bid closer to £21.6 million for Ederson Moraes, and the offer from Galatasaray was much below their valuation. But it is also claimed that Ederson is open to the move, having agreed to personal terms and even willing to lower his salary to facilitate the transfer. The Brighton match, City’s final fixture before the transfer window closes, could be pivotal. A strong performance from Ederson, if selected, might reaffirm his commitment to City, while another start for Trafford could signal a shift.
