Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has voiced his thoughts about a possible replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo who is rumoured to leave the Red Devils for Champions League football in this transfer window. Ferdinand feels Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski could be the perfect player to take the number seven jersey in Manchester.
“I don’t see it happening, man, I can’t even think about that because you have to look at the whole situation. It’s getting on in the window, if Man United were to let him go (Erling) Haaland and (Darwin]) Nunez probably the first two on your list have gone.
“The only other person who could fill into those shoes, who I’d have confidence in who’s possibly capable of doing it, is (Robert) Lewandowski,” Ferdinand was quoted as saying by his magazine.
Ferdinand then addressed how Lewandowski wants a move to Barcelona and the only way he could come to Old Trafford is if CR7 is transferred to Bayern Munich. “Lewandowski looks like he has his heart set on Barcelona if they can get that deal done. The only way I see it happening is Man United could get Lewandowski and then Ronaldo could go there – that’s the only way it happens.
My story at Bayern is over: Lewandowski
As mentioned earlier, Lewandowski wants to leave his Bavarian club as he said, “My story at Bayern is over,” he said at a Poland press conference. “After everything that has happened in recent months, I cannot imagine further good cooperation. Bayern is a serious club and I hope they will not keep me just because they can. A transfer is the best solution for all parties.”
Robert Lewandowski joined Bayern Munich from Borrusia Dortmund in July 2014. In his eight years in Munich, he has scored 344 goals in 375 matches for the team. He also registered 72 assists. But Lewandowski’s current contract is valid until June 30, 2023.
