After missing out from 2020 calendar due to Covid-19 pandemic, Formula 1 has returned to the streets of Baku at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2021. The sixth race of the season and the third longest circuit on the Formula One calendar is going to be crucial for Mercedes as after securing top two podium finishes in 2019, 7-time world champion Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas will be eyeing to defend their positions in the F1 standings following a disappointing performance in the Friday practice sessions.
It was Monaco GP winner Max Verstappen who continued his form to shine in the free practice session 1, with the fastest lap timing of 1’43.184. However, his Red Bull counterpart tops the chart in FP2 ,0.101 seconds faster than Verstappen. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz pushed their Ferrari hard but could not get past through the Red Bull drivers in both the practice sessions.
Winning 3 out of 5 races so far in the season, Lewis Hamilton’s struggling performance in the practice session has put seven-time world champion’s tittle in danger. The Mercedes driver could only manage a 7th finish in FP1, while he finished outside top ten in the second session. Likewise, 2019 Azerbaijan champion, Valtteri Bottas also failed to deliver with a humiliating 16th finish in the second session.
