Mercedes driver George Russell emerged as one of the most consistent performers after securing P5 in every race of the 2022 season. Russell has achieved three podium finishes in his maiden season as a full-time Mercedes driver and currently leads Hamilton by 34 points in the driver’s championship. Although seven-time world champion and senior-pro Lewis Hamilton is not having the best of the season, Russell says he feels inspired and motivated by the way Hamilton works behind the scenes.

Notably, Hamilton lost the 2021 World Championship to Max Verstappen in controversial circumstances in the final race and is yet to make an impact in the 2022 season. Hamilton has just two podium finishes this season and in both cases, he finished third. His performances this season read as 3rd at Bahrain GP, 10th at Saudi Arabian GP, 4th at Australian GP, 13th at Emilia Romagna GP, 6th at Miami GP, 5th at Spanish GP, 8th at Monaco GP, 4th at Azerbaijan GP and 3rd at recently concluded Canadian GP.

In his recent interaction, Russell was asked to evaluate the 2022 season to which he said, “I am learning so much from him. How he works, how he goes about his business with his engineers, how he gets sort of the whole team motivated, it’s quite inspiring to see. Also on the technical side is pretty impressive, which a lot of people won’t recognise or appreciate.”

Russell further highlighted that there is a lot of room for improvement but he believed results for Mercedes in the 2022 season have been fine. “I don’t think we could have probably achieved much higher results when I look at the season rationally. Other than Bahrain, we have probably finished as high as we could in every single race,” he added.

The Mercedes driver also confessed that the team is in a development phase right now, and must remain optimistic. “As a team, we have done a great job to maximise the points available to us. So, you have got to take that as a positive and try to continue this momentum forward,” Russell said.
