After all the drama and an emotional roller coaster, Tokyo 2020 Olympic games have come to an end. Although there were some new champions that were unearthed, few well-known faces continued to dominate the world stage. Celebrations have already started in Paris, which is the host city of the next Olympic Games in 2024. Some 1,083 days remain for the next edition of the biggest sporting extravaganza.

For India though, the Tokyo games meant their best ever performance as far as the medals tally is concerned. While they had won six medals at London 2012, they won seven here at the Japanese capital.

During these games, it was for the first time that India not only won a medal on the first day of the event but also on the last day to both begin and end the event on high and keep the hearts of billions of Indians pumping hard and fast till the very end. While India were deprived of gold till the end, they managed to make their presence felt in that column which has now taken their overall gold medal tally in Olympic history to double digits.

It was India's first track and field star in decades, Neeraj Chopra, who won a historic gold in the men's javelin throw finals with a best throw of 87.58 m. While Chopra's gold was the first in athletics for India in over 100 years, it also made it up for the disappointment of athletes like PT Usha and Milkha Singh who had famously finished fourth. Even Anju Bobby George had finished fifth.

Chopra's gold also drastically improved India's ranking which was in the sixties, prior to the javelin thrower's effort. However, India finished 48th. This also makes this the country's best-ever performance in the 21st century. Overall, India won one gold, two silver and four bronze medals at these Summer Games.
